Blackpool Transport in Lancashire has suspended two of their bus drivers this week, telling them that they have to lose 7lb in four weeks.
The Transport Company has been criticised for this move, but they have justified their decision on the grounds of safety – to protect their passengers and the drivers themselves.
The Company says they are following professional medical advice and that they are taking this action to ensure that customers and their staff are not put at risk.
John Boughton, Regional Organiser for Unite told the Daily Mail ‘there are currently two men suspended with full pay, who have been told they need to lose 7lbs in the next four weeks. If they haven’t lost this weight in time, they have been told that they will go on unpaid suspension for 12 months’.
Talks are planned for next week to try and resolve the issue.
