The Employment Tribunals Service has published its Annual Statistics Report for 2009 / 10, which shows an increase of 56% in claims being made.
The number of claims made in 2009 / 10 was 236,000. The Report also showed that:
The number of claims of unfair dismissal, breach of contract and redundancy rose by 17 % from 2008 / 09
Accepted claims are at their highest ever levels
The number of cases disposed of increased by 22 % to those in 2008 / 09
These figures tend to suggest that claims are at an all time high as a result of recession and as such, employers need to ensure that they follow procedures to the letter to avoid claims being made successfully against them.
