C.M.A. Tools (Burnley) Ltd has been fined £1,000 plus £1,000 costs for breaching health and safety law in the circumstances of an industrial accident in which an employee sustained a serious injury to his hand.
The worker was applying a piece of emery cloth to a metal component on a lathe when it became trapped by the rotating mechanism. He was wearing a glove at the time and this pulled his hand further into the machinery. The accident victim, who lost a finger, had not received training on how to operate the lathe safely, or on the dangers of using emery cloths on metalworking lathes.
