According to figures from the UK Border Agency, the total annual fines paid by employers for taking on illegal workers doubled last year.
In 2009, the UKBA imposed 2,120 civil penalties with fines totalling £22.1 million, which is almost double the figures for 2008 when 1, 164 penalties were issued with fines totalling £11.2 million.
The increase is likely connected to the fact that the UKBA was given power to award fixed penalties of £10,000 for each illegal worker in March 2008. Prior to the UKBA given that power, there were only 38 prosecutions for employing illegal immigrants.
These figures show that it is imperative for employers to ensure that they have compliance checks in place to avoid these costly fines.
