A cable installer working on a scissor lift with two colleagues tying cables into overhead trays fell 8 metres when they collapsed, knocking him out of the lift, causing him to suffer severe spinal injuries and is now paralysed from the waist down.
The accident occurred on 25 January 2007 at premises in Manor Royal Industrial Park, Crawley, where Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil Ltd had been subcontracted to design and build the mechanical and electrical systems in a number of new buildings.
An HSE official explained how the accident could have been prevented if the company had ensured all parts of the cable tray system had been properly designed and installed, including how it was attached to the building. During the work, components were failing or showing signs of failure, but the company took no action.
Skanska Rashleigh Weatherfoil Ltd admitted breaching s. 2 (1) and 3 (1) of the Health and Safety etc at Work Act 1974 and was fined £120,000 plus costs of £81,927.
